Art and Artists of Twentieth-Century China. (OBIS)

Sullivan, Michael.
Berkeley: University of California Press, 1996.
Art Lib. N 7345 .S79 1996

This extensive overview analyzes the art produced in twentieth-century China, and the collision of western artistic styles and techniques with traditional Chinese methods, ideas, and values.  The effects of western influence on “modern” China continues to be a frequently debated issue in the field of Chinese art history and this book reveals valuable information about the cultural and political climates that shaped artistic production from the beginning twentieth-century through the 1980's.  As noted by the author, this book discusses both “major” works and lesser known works (or works by lesser known artists) created during significant periods of cultural and political change.  In addition to a selected bibliography, this book is supplemented by a "Biographical Index" providing brief biographical data on over 800 twentieth-century Chinese artists.                                                                                      [MJR 3/5/02; rev. An Index-Dictionary of Chinese Artists, and Collectors, Connoisseurs with Character Identification by Modified Stroke Count. (OBIS)

Seymour, Nancy C.

Metuchen and London: Scarecrow Press, 1988.

 Art Ref. N 7348 .S48 1988

The place to start biographical research for those who don't read Chinese, Seymour provides information on over 5,000 Chinese individuals from the T'ang Dynasty through the Modern Period.  Most sources are arranged by dynasty or period; Seymour directs readers from the artist to their period.  Her "Method for identifying Chinese Characters" is useful if one has an artist's name in character form and needs to identify its romanized (Wade-Giles) form.  Names with apostrophes are filed after those without (e.g., Chi precedes Ch'i).  Includes a useful index to alternate and additional names.
