Assignment: Presentation of a Short Film/Video

March 15th & following
For this assignment, each student is required to research and present a short film or video from the library’s collection (max
length: 10 minutes). These presentations will be ongoing throughout the semester and will be scheduled in class. Presentations should begin with a short introduction of the piece and the filmmaker or artist. If appropriate, you may also briefly provide background information relevant to an understanding of your selection. We will then screen the piece and discuss it. Distribute a one sheet about the film/video before you begin, including the following:

o An original, 1-paragraph synopsis (100-200 words)
o Credit information about the piece (title, artist/filmmaker, year of production, running time, format)
o Three ideas for contextualizing the work in a screening program or exhibition

Class Project: Weekly Microcinema

Together, the members of this class will collaborate on a weekly screening series that will take place throughout the semester. This series, which we will discuss, develop, and strategize on an ongoing basis, will consist of programs curated by guests and the individual class members, as well as screenings by visiting filmmakers. The class will work together to name the series, to produce and distribute promotional materials, to develop an audience, and to present the programs. Each student is required to participate fully in the screenings, through attendance and also by assisting with specific tasks, which will be determined in class week-to-week. Discussion and evaluation of the class project, and each student’s contribution to it, will be occur regularly throughout the semester.

Assignment: Curated Screening Program

Wed. April 20th & following
This is the major assignment for the course, and you should start thinking about it as soon as possible. Students will divide
into three-person teams to curate and present an original screening program. As a guideline, you should aim to select 3-6 short films and/or videos as a basis for your program, which should total approximately 30-45 minutes in length. The pieces that you choose should speak to each other in some coherent way, whether formally, thematically, conceptually, etc. You are encouraged to use your own research interests as a starting point for the program. Public presentations of your curated programs will take place during Weeks 11-14. Plan to briefly introduce your program.

Thurs., March 22nd
A one-page proposal, outlining the basis and organizing ideas of your program, is due on the Thursday before
spring recess (Week 7). The proposal should include a clear, 1-2 paragraph description, names of some artists you plan or wish to include, and titles of specific pieces, if possible. We will discuss your program ideas and review the preparations for your screenings in the weeks following spring recess.

In addition to your screening program, you are required to provide a short curatorial text (1-2 pages). Examples will be provided. Include a set of program notes (capsule descriptions of and credit info for each piece in your program). Curatorial texts and programs notes should be typed, computer-printed and distributed prior to your screening. You will be responsible for promoting your program, including the preparation and circulation of a press release and an email announcement. The class will work together to spread the word around campus about all of the screening programs.
